GBR Reader Reports Scam PDF Print

A Zionville reader of GoBlueRidge.net wrote to warn of a scam that was very convincing, saying “a call with the Caller ID showing the name as "VISA" and an 800 number with a message more convincing sounding than usual.” The writer said, “The premise was that if I did not respond my interest rate was going up. Later in the call they mentioned that it was a result of ‘the Stimulus.’" The writer said that “When I called the 800 number to see if it was a working number, the recording sounded ALMOST like my VISA contact - same wording, etc. Of course you had to give your VISA # to be able to speak with anyone or hear recorded info.” He wrote, “I double checked with my VISA and of course, they said they would not be calling about anything like that and if they did, it would be via mail.”  There are a number of phone scams going around, to go along with paving, shady painting and other repairs, and the ‘home inspection’ scam with two people, one who busies the homeowner while the other steals from the home.
