|UPDATE: Extensive Damage in Afternoon Fire|

Boone fire officials have determined that a lightning strike caused extensive damage to a two-story home during the storms that raked the area late yesterday afternoon. The home belonging to Rob Holton of Holton Mountain Rentals was found on fire with the first fire call was placed by neighbors at 5:43 p.m. when they noticed smoke at the house at 861 Windwood Lane,
just off Jake's Mountain Road. A firefighter, living near-by, reported the smoke just as the call was placed to 9-1-1. No one was at the home when the fire started, and neighbors helped to remove several family pets, which were unharmed, according to fire officials. Boone Fire was assisted by tankers and manpower from Blowing Rock and Deep Gap as mutual aid, as well as Foscoe, who came into Boone to cover the main Boone station. Watauga Medics and Watauga Rescue Squad also were on the scene. The fire centered near the chimney on the upper floor, where firefighters could be seen spraying into the walls. Boone fire put estimates of $175,000 in structure damage, another $80,000 to the contents.
