Hardin Park Teacher's Comments Spark Perdue's Budget Veto PDF Print

Governor Bev Perdue decided last Friday in her visit to Hardin Park School to veto the state budget as presented to her by the legislature after hearing this comment from a Hardin Park teacher advising a student to go into teaching, but not in North Carolina. Pedue said teacher Alan Felker’s comments pushed her to decide on the veto of the budget after Felker’s advise to a student to teach, "You have to teach in a state that believes in you and a state that believes in children, and right now, I cannot honestly say that North Carolina does that." Republicans feel that they have the votes—including five democrats—to override the $19.7 billion budget, and that vote will come this week.
