In a closed meeting tonight- Avery County fire chiefs
plant to discuss the newest draft of the fire service contract.
The deadline to
sign was July 1- and even though a new draft has been released, many
departments still have not signed. Firefighters have taken issue with a clause
in the contract that would give the county ownership over firefighting
equipment previously owned by individual departments. Firefighters also noted
the contracts do not have an expiration date- and fear signing the contract
would mean an eternity of firefighting for one year’s budget. Fire chiefs hope
to work something out before insurance rates are affected.
