The Saturday explosion and fire took place just after 3pm. All the fire departments in Caldwell County along with fire departments from Boone, Burke, Watauga, Wilkes, Catawba, Buncombe, and Mecklenburg Counties assisted in the efforts to battle the fire. Crews had the fire under control just after six pm. Mandatory evacuations around the facility were issued and highway 321 was closed for several hours while crews rushed into the scene. The fire destroyed one building at RPM, and jumped the property lines and destroyed two upholstery operations at a neighboring property.
The E-P-A is monitoring clean up and STAT Inc. of Caldwell County is assisting in the clean up. The American Red Cross was on site the Caldwell County Fairgrounds where Emergency Services had set up a staging area, and opened shelters for displaced residents.
