Hail Pounds Boone PDF Print

Boone was pounded by a thunderstorm that dropped first dime-sized hail, then looked like it emptied the icemaker in the sky.  The storm formed just on the east side of Watauga after several other storms pounded Wilkes, Alleghany, and into Stokes,

downing trees, power lines, and in one case, trapping a Wilkes School Bus with trees felled in front and behind.  Volunteer firemen were busy with all those calls when a structure caught fire on Elkin Highway, causing four departments to respond.  BREMCO reported outages in most counties of its service area, with 1100+ in Watauga, mostly around Deep Gap and Blowing Rock.  The storms are part of the system that hammered the midwest over the last few days, killing scores.
