The Caldwell County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating a fire at the former Garnes’ Auto Shop, on Garnes Place, off of Alfred Hartley Road. in the Mt. Herman area of Caldwell County. The shop, owned by Ronnie Garnes, was primarily vacant as Garnes has mostly moved his business to a new location. The fire was discovered and called in by Garnes’ brother around 1 p.m. yesterday afternoon. The building was completely destroyed by the fire and is still under investigation by Fire Marshal/Emergency Management Coordinator Robbie Wilkie.
Since the garage still contained some hazardous materials such as auto paint, officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are on the scene this evening making sure there is no water runoff that could be a hazard. This is a routine procedure in fires that involve structures such as this.
Responding agencies: Hudson, Little River, Sawmills and North Catawba Fire Departments. Caldwell County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management offices and Caldwell County EMS.
There was no estimate of damages late yesterday evening.
