During the “public comment” segment of the Town Council meeting Steve Canipe, representing the Southern Appalachian Historical Association, requested Boone Town Council support the Association’s efforts to have the Tatum family collection donated to it.

Mr. Canipe shared that the Tatum family’s artifacts were loaned to ASU’s Cultural Museum by the Tatum family and displayed there until it closed. Since then the Museum’s items have been in storage. He, and other members, of the SAHA fear if the collection isn’t kept in tact and placed in the hands of their membership it could be lost, damaged, or sold out of the county. The Tatum Cabin was donated to the Southern Appalachian Historical Society in 1959 and they feel it is the perfect home for the Tatum family’s collection of historical artifacts. They also feel it would be a shame for the collection to leave Watauga County. In a strong show of support the council took immediate action by passing a resolution of support for this effort and directed the staff to draft a letter to Appalachian State University supporting the SAHA’s request. Mayor Pro Tem, Lynn Mason, reflected the feeling of the Council in her comment; “It is critical to keep this collection where it belongs”!
