Nelson's Watauga Budget: No Tax Increase PDF Print
Written by Steve Frank

Watauga County Manager Rocky Nelson’s 2011-2012 budget—his last— hit the table before the Watauga County Commission this week, and while most of the discussion was about the Old Watauga High bid, Nelson’s budget has a number of interesting points. One is that, in spite of the economic situation, he is proposing no tax increase.  Two, he has appropriated an increase of $408,000 for the Watauga Schools—about a third of the amount schools sought from the county to fill the gap in their well-trimmed budget between state funds and their needs.  Nelson’s $58+ million dollar budget increases county spending by $5.7 million due to a debt service plan and transfers $4.5 million dollars from undesignated fund balance and $620,000 from the capital reserve fund and other smaller funds.  County employees would get a 3% cost of living raise but no merit raises. Now, county commissioners get their turn at refining the county budget with a July 1st implementation date.
