An Ashe County man—a retired Baltimore police officer—died Friday night in what appears to be an accidental fire. Sheriff James Williams said that the fire call was to a mobile home on Rhododendron Drive in the Phillips Gap area, firefighters arriving to a fully-engulfed structure fire.

As the firefighting effort was winding down, Fleetwood firemen found the body of 74-year old William Cline Blackburn.  Sheriff Williams said that Blackburn had talked to his sister late in the afternoon, and although he had a number of health issues, he seemed fine at that point.  The SBI has been called in to assist the Ashe Sheriff’s Office in the investigation and an autopsy has been ordered in the death.
