They called out  Alleghany County first responders late Tuesday, but the  Laurel Springs first responder vehicle— #806—was not at the VFD building on NC 18 when they arrived to pick it up—apparently stolen by a Laurel Springs man. Laurel Springs first responders and fire department got the call at 11:30 Tuesday night to respond to a wreck near their station, on Jane Taylor Mountain, and there found what was left of their truck—and the suspect, critically injured in the wreck.  Also in the truck they found a 12 inch kitchen knife stolen from the fire department’s kitchen in the break-in to the station. The suspect, Richard Shane Walser, 44, was rushed to Alleghany Memorial, then transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, seriously hurt in the incident. Law enforcement went to the man’s home, and there found pot plants in various stages of growth, and a number of charges are pending.
