BREMCO Board Lowers Rates for Second Month PDF Print

Members will get help lowering electricity bills for a second consecutive month after the Board of Directors of Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation approved another month for a temporary rate reduction. The Board approved the reduction to help members after extended record cold weather has led to higher than normal winter electric bills. Recent favorable wholesale power costs also helped.

Savings will be 10 percent for the average member who uses 1,000 kilowatt (kwh) hours of electricity monthly. In other words, members will save $10 on every 1,000 kwh used. The reduction was first implemented on bills members received in January and the current reduction will be reflected on bills received in February.

Colder than normal temperatures this winter has led to increased heating needs and higher bills for all consumers.

“As a cooperative, our primary goal is to help members, not make a profit. Our goal is to provide the lowest cost electricity possible,” said Doug Johnson, chief executive officer. “The Board felt it was possible to extend the temporary rate reduction by one more month without negatively impacting the cooperative’s financial stability and we’re pleased this will be able to help all members during a time many are struggling due to higher bills caused by weather impacts,” he explained.

“We hope the rate reduction along with energy efficiency steps members are making will add up to make a positive difference,” Johnson concluded.

Members wanting to learn more about how to save through energy efficiency measures, or for other helpful options such as budget billing or the cooperative’s new “pay as you go” option called FlexPay, can either call their local district office or visit www.BlueRidgeEMC.com
