Father, Son Die in Burke Fire PDF Print

A father and son died in a fire that destroyed a large house in southeast Burke County early Monday. Burke fire officials identified the men killed as 85-year-old Lawrence Pittman and his 57-year-old son, Jerry Pittman. The fire was reported shortly after 2 a.m. at a three-story house on Camp Meeting Road, off N.C. 18 near Connelly Springs. Neighbors were awakened by at least one sharp explosion, that apparently a propane tank exploding. Authorities in Burke County said that firefighters had found a body in the house, early on, but it was after dawn both were found and their identities released. Relatives said that the Pittmans had lived in the house for nearly four decades. Six fire departments battled the blaze, which spread to outbuildings and vehicles, and firefighters needed more than two hours to bring the blaze under control. The cause has not been determined.
