More of 'Us' in US, NC PDF Print

There are more of us now…more people in North Carolina, more in the southern and western states—while one state and one territory have shrunk a bit.  It’s the Census data—the snapshot of ‘us’ we do every decade.

Got neighbors from Michigan? According to the census, it’s the only state shrinking, along with Puerto Rico.  There are a million and a half more North Carolinians than there were in 2000—9.5 million Tar heel residents, an increase of 18.5%. That’s fast, but Florida and Texas increased even faster.  And our increase was not enough to give us a new congressional district, while our neighbors in South Carolina will pick up their 7th.  Texas picks up 4 new house members.  North Carolina is now the 10th most populated state of the 50, moving up a spot from #11. There will be much more data released by the Census Bureau—we will be greatly analyzed—and we may find out more about who we are.
