Students Benefit From Watauga Education Foundation Grants PDF Print

Boone, NC – In an economy that is seeing people struggling to make ends meet, the giving-spirit of the High Country is still shining. Because of the extraordinary contributions of this community, the Watauga Education Foundation is able to award $22,000 in funding to creative teachers, for projects to improve the classroom experience. “We are always impressed with our teachers who go the extra mile,” said Allocations Chair, Emily Greene.  “It is a privilege to be able to help them achieve a higher standard in their classrooms and to see the positive impact they are having on the children of this community.”


In addition to the grants, the WEF also funded Battle of the Books and Junior Battle of the Books.  “The quick recall competition is of great benefit to students in terms of broadening their book selection and improving reading comprehension,” said Jay Fenwick, current president of the WEF.  “The Foundation has always had a soft spot for BOB,” he added.

Teachers from every school will receive funding.  Projects range from targeted, STEM initiatives (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), to Art and Physical Education.  “If you see a grant certificate hanging in your child’s classroom,” said Greene, “please ask the teacher to tell you about the wonderful things she/he is doing to improve learning for your child.”

In addition to the grants, the Watauga Education Foundation has made significant contributions to our schools in 2010, including $10,000 for computers at WHS, $3,500 for a new Grand Piano at WHS, a $2,000 Kate Swift Reese college scholarship and in November, we will begin signing up pre-school children to receive a free book each month through Imagination Library.  “We so appreciate the confidence this community places in our board to allocate your donations for education,” said Fenwick.  “I encourage anyone who has ever had a teacher to go to our website at and make a donation to this incredible organization that supports the hard work of our local educators”

The Watauga Education Foundation has been raising funds for Watauga County Public Schools since 1989.  It has distributed more than $1million to our schools.  Families can contribute by attending one of the Watauga Education Foundation’s upcoming fundraisers.  There’s Flapjack Flip, a warm and tasty pancake breakfast and raffle at WHS on December 4, from 8:00AM-11:00AM.  It’s a delicious way to start the day.  New this year, the Boone Service League will host its Holiday Market in conjunction with FJF.
