How good is Operation Medicine Chest for the High Country? Saturday, again, the local effort showed how to do the task, collecting incredible amounts of prescription drugs for safe disposal.

Saturday’s totals showed the local effort was the biggest and best yet— 310,108 pills, 25 gallons of liquid medications and 4.75 pounds of solid medications collected here, meaning the Watauga operation collected more drugs than anyone else in the state. In fact, according to Sheriff Len Hagaman, the entire statewide "OMC" collected a total of about 550 pounds, but he said “our one barrel of pills alone weighed in at an estimated 300 Lbs.”  The Sheriff thanked the many volunteers, MADD and SADD who, nonstop, filled up the one barrel - thanks especially to Carrie Phillips with Boone Drugs—part of some 98 volunteers for the effort. The Sheriff also thanked the law enforcement partners in Boone, Blowing Rock, Seven Devils, and SBI Special Agent Wade Colvard. The project keeps pharmaceuticals out of the waste stream and disposes them safely.
