A North Wilkesboro woman was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after colliding with a Wilkes EMS ambulance on an emergency call late last night in Wilkesboro—and is being charged with DWI and other counts in connection with the wreck. Wilkesboro Police say 22-year old Stevie Lee Hamby not only failed to yield for the ambulance, which was entering the intersection on 421 and Winkler Mill with lights and siren, but she ran her red light and slammed into the ambulance while trying to turn east-bound.  Ms. Hamby was rushed from the scene to the Winston-Salem hospital, but was conscious and alert, according to police.  The ambulance crew did not sustain any injuries in the 9:55pm accident, but the ambulance had an estimated $10,000 in damage while the VW Stevie Hamby was driving was totaled.

Another Wilkes accident yesterday involved a vehicle rolling over just below the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The mid-afternoon accident was on Piney Ridge Road a short distance off NC 16 and caused Wilbar firemen and Wilkes paramedics to respond.  In Avery last night, an accident victim managed to make his way to the Green Valley Fire Department for help in spite of some serious injuries.  Avery paramedics were dispatched to the scene around 8pm with reports indicating that the driver struck a large rock or other object, causing him head and other injuries that left him in serious pain and unable to detail the wreck.
Saturday wrecks included motorcycle accidents, one in which Avery and Burke personnel were called to NC 181 Saturday afternoon in Jonas Ridge.  Reports from the scene indicated a female rider was thrown from the cycle in the collision and was dumped in the middle of the road.  Burke paramedics transported the woman, and the state patrol is investigating.

Another motorcycle injury came in an accident just out of Blowing Rock on US 221around 5pm Saturday.

Shortly after that, several vehicles were involved in a collision at 321 and Aho road and Watauga Medics responded to the injury call there.  A 21-year old Charlotte woman, a passenger in a Honda that struck a Lincoln, was taken to Watauga Medical Center complaining of head pain.
In Wilkes, an 8pm Saturday wreck occurred on Winkler Mill road near Congo road, and then within a few minutes, a hit-and-run with injuries occurred on 16 North at White Oak Road.  There was an earlier accident in Wilkes on the NC 16 interchange with US 421 where a vehicle ran off the ramp to 421 and landed in the woods.  It was not clear whether a medical condition might have caused that accident, being investigated by Wilkesboro Police.
