Two area men were arrested by Wilkesboro Police after the theft of a cell phone at a convenience store.  Just before midnight Monday night, the two distracted the clerk on duty asking direction and showing a map, apparently picking up the clerk’s cell phone in the process.  When he asked the two about the phone, they pretended to help look for the phone, then they were seen running from the highway 421 store. Police were called to the scene and given descriptions of the suspects and vehicle, and the car was spotted on E Street minutes later.  The suspects denied knowledge of the theft, and denied police permission to search the car, but a phone was spotted on the seat of the car and police had the clerk call his number.  When the phone rang, the two were arrested.  From the store, video of the theft in progress also showed the suspects stealing the phone, all leading to the larceny charge for 21-year old David Tyler McKinney of Mountain City Tennessee and Timothy Carson, 31, of Boone.  Bonds were set at $500 for each of the men.

And a West Jefferson woman was arrested in the theft of nearly $600 in electronics from the Wilkesboro Wal-Mart Monday afternoon.  41-year old Lisa Gail Frye of Nettle Knob Road was charged with the theft after the assistant manager was distracted by a man who turned out to be Frye’s alleged ex-husband while she pushed past with the goods in a shopping cart.  Her bond was set at $500 as well.
