The names of those involved in a shooting yesterday evening in Traphill have been released by Wilkes County Sheriff's Office.

Police say the shooter was 41-year-old Randall Whitley and the victim was 45-year-old Tim Potts. An uncomfirmed report says Potts was shot in the chest. He was transported to Baptist Hospital last night via ambulance. The shooting occurred yesterday evening at 7:51 near Shumate Mountain Road off Traphill Road. When asked for details about the incident, a contact at the sheriff's department called it a "disturbance."  The two men were apparently in the middle of a fight when Whitley allegedly shot Potts. The number of shots and the type of gun involved has not been released. It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the shooting.

A source within the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office says both men have criminal records.

Whitley was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury. He is currently being held on a $50,000 secured bond.

Potts was listed in "fair condition" this morning.
