Family members have identified the 17-year old killed in an officer-involved shooting in Morganton just after midnight today.  Family said Michael Sipes, who was a Freedom High School student and a member of the ROTC, died after being hit by gunfire. WSOC-TV reports that witnesses said authorities didn’t identify themselves as police, and that Sipes did not fire his gun.  A Burke County spokesman saying the teenager was armed with a long gun and was outside a home at the Independence mobile home park on Airpark Drive when officers arrived just after midnight this morning.  Police were responding to a call for disturbance or a loud noise, but other details have not yet been released, and the SBI has taken over the investigation.
