Update on Oil Spill into Creek/7-23-2010 PDF Print
Written by Steve Frank
Thursday, 22 July 2010 12:56

Boone Firemen responded yesterday morning to a fuel spill from Mountain Oil, springing from a tank on their King Street lot and into a small creek that flows directly into the South Fork of the New River.  The red-tinted fuel turned the creek red while firemen struggled to get ahead of the spill, then work back toward its origin.  On Chestnut Street, where it ran under the street, firemen used absorbent sheets to soak the fuel from the top of the water, and eventually built a dike in the stream to pool the leaked fuel.  A company specializing in such clean-ups took on the task by mid-afternoon to mitigate the damage.  Just what penalties Mountain Oil might face remain to be seen.

***7/23/2010 @ 12:10 pm by Cindy Cafaro...Boone Fire Department would like to remind everyone that the oil spill is still being cleaned up. This will be an ongoing process over the next week or so. They are asking that all residents please stay out of the creek until the "all clear" is given.
