Riverkeepers: Sealant Blamed on Boone Fishkill PDF Print

Boone Police and Fire were called Saturday afternoon to a chemical spill after an odor alerted someone to the potentially noxious situation on highway 105 in Boone.

The potentially toxic situation was called into the Watauga Riverkeepers, and Donna Lisenby who not only assessed the situation, but posted a YouTube video, about the situation, "So here we are just downstream of the BB&T parking lot where the asphalt sealer ran off into this tributary, and we've conducted a small survey to see the impact of this sealant run-off had on the creek.  And so far I can tell you we've found at least 21 dead crawdads or crayfish as well as some dead fish." The video showed that the chemical appears to be sealant from a parking lot that had been applied just before a rain shower—sealant that washed off into a near-by stream.  Just what fire officials were able to do to mitigate the situation was not clear over the weekend, and just what action might be taken remains to be seen.  The video link is:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5_QJIBYg5c
