We have a blanket crisis at the shelter again this year. 

 

We are asking for lightweight, quick drying, fleece-like fabric to make it easier on our washer & dryer. But of course we will use what is donated!

 

You may drop them @ the Humane Society, Adam’s Lumber & Hardware, The Pet Place, Watauga County Public Library, The Jones House, Joe’s Italian Kitchen or @ the radio station.  We will be happy to meet you or arrange to pick up from you. Please call Cindy 828-406-3328.

This year Blowing Rock Parks and Recreation will be organizing the annual Christmas Parade for the Town of Blowing Rock. The Parade will take place on Saturday November 28th at 2pm with line up to begin at noon. Blowing Rock Rotary Foundation Charity Music Show Blowing Rock School Auditorium

Blowing Rock Rotary Foundation Charity Music Show

 

An unusual combination of interpretative a cappella, acoustic, and bluegrass music will fill the air in Blowing Rock, thanks to the 3rd annual Charity Music Show, Saturday, November 21, 8:00 pm, Blowing Rock School auditorium. Headlining the event are  Higher Ground, a men’s a cappella group from Appalachian State University, and Diana & Sarvis Ridge, the acoustic and bluegrass band that captured first place honors in the 2009 HayesGrass bluegrass competition.

 

Admission to the Charity Music Show is $10 adults, and $5 for children under 12.  Additional questions should be directed to David Rogers at Watauga Equity Management, Inc., 828-295-6448, or email at dr@wataugamgt.com.  Additional, tax-deductible contributions to the benefitted charitable causes can be made by making checks payable to the Blowing Rock Rotary Foundation, with a “Charity Music Show” notation on the check.

The Watauga Humane Society/Santa Paws Photo Shoot The Little Red School House

Family pets can share their Christmas wish lists with Santa Paws while they have their holiday photo taken.  The Watauga Humane Society has arranged for Santa Paws to visit the Little Red School House in Valle Crucis (behind Mast General Store) on Saturday and Sunday December 5th and 6th from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm.
 
A 5 x 7 photo costs $10, and additional photos are available for $5 each.
 
All types of animals are invited to attend this holiday event with their owners.  All dogs must be on a leash.

Card Game Group Forming Watauga County Project on Aging
A group is forming to play Hand and Foot, a version of Canasta. The group will meet each Wednesday from 1pm-4pm at the L.E. Harrill Senior Center beginning August 12th. Everyone is welcome even if you don't know how to play and want to learn. Please call 265-8090 for more information.

Calling All Musicians! Watauga County Project on Aging
Do you like to play music? Please come join our group of amateur musicians on Thursday mornings for a morning of down-home music and a good time! The group meets each Thursday at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center from 10am-Noon to provide entertainment and lunch is available afterward. Musicians of all ages and abilities welcome. Special musical presentations can also be scheduled for anyone interested in sharing their talents individually or in smaller groups. Relay for Life Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale Boone Area
The Howard's Creek Baptist Church Relay for Life team will be sponsoring a Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday, November 21, from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. The event will be held at the Three Forks Baptist Association Building on Hwy. 194 N., approximately 1/2 mile from New Market Center on the left. Items will include ornaments, gift baskets, holiday decor, etc., as well as homemade jams/jellies and baked goods. Sausage gravy and biscuits will be available for breakfast and hotdogs will be served for lunch. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

The $1-per-can grace applies to overdue fines only, not towards fees for lost items or other charges. Please bring canned good donations to the front (circulation) desk, Watauga County Public Library, 140 Queen Street, Boone, to receive credit towards overdue fines.

25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration ASU Farthing Auditorium
During the 1950s and 60s, Civil Rights Movement leaders like Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. inspired millions to stand up against social injustice. The Movement’s message of non-violence and civil disobedience would inspire pivotal events like the lunch counter sit-in in Greensboro NC, the bus boycott in Montgomery AL, the integration of Central High School in Little Rock AR, the freedom rides throughout the South, the march to Montgomery, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Nikki Giovanni is a world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. One of the most widely-read American poets, she prides herself on being “a Black American, a daughter, a mother, a professor of English.” Giovanni remains as determined and committed as ever to the fight for civil rights and equality with a focus on the individual, specifically, on the power one has to make a difference in oneself, and thus, in the lives of others.
