"Rock In Him" to Involve Area Youth Groups

This Sunday, the youth at First Presbyterian Church in Boone will lead a special worship service involving area youth groups from various denominations. The program is called "Rock in Him" and will involve area churches hosting a worship service (each month) allowing the youth to be in complete leadership of the service. FPC Boone's youth will kick off the first service this Sun. Jan. 24 at 6pm. Feb 28 will be at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, March service will be at Deerfield United Methodist Church/Faithbridge UMC, April will be at First Bapt Blowing Rock, and May will be at Perkinsville Bapt Church. The purpose of this special program is to provide an opportunity for the youth to grow in leadership, develop community among area churches and youth, and to give the youth a place to "worship in their own way". The service will last about an hour followed by refreshments in the fellowship hall. Any church who might be interested in hosting a service can contact Lisa Courtney, Youth Director at First Presbyterian Church, Boone at (828)406-0615. All youth in the area and youth groups are invited to come be a part of this kick off event.

Help Others in Bitter ColdDear Friends,

I am moved to send this note to you, and I hope that you will receive it kindly.  I've become aware that there are many people in our community who cannot pay their power bills and are in danger of having their service ended and I want to ask you to join me an effort to make sure that doesn't happen.

I sit in the warmth of my house with my gas logs burning even when the power goes out, and I think of people who don't have any such comforts - but I can only think about them obliquely because to consider that there are little children very near who are without heat in this unforgiving cold just hurts too much.  But I can't stop thinking about them and today I knew I had to do something or go mad. I asked God please to tell me what it might be that would have an immediate impact on someone's great need.

The idea came to call the power company and ask if there was any way to make a direct donation to the account of someone who was in danger of losing their heat.  So I did.  And just a few moments ago, Susan Jones, an Area Coordinator with Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation, returned my call and said that yes, there is, and that it can be done very simply. She told me of one case (out of so many that she has been struggling with today) where my donation would make the difference to a woman with young children who is in danger of losing her power because her account is in terrible shape. I gave Susan my word I would put a check in the mail tonight, and gained her assurance that it would be sufficient.

It's hard to ask people to give more than I know you already are, but I can't help but ask - would you consider joining me?  Our collective donations however small or large could create a tangible blanket around so many people who are suffering terribly in this brutal cold, with no good news in sight where the temperature is concerned, and you just wonder how long they can make it.

If you would like to send a donation, make our check out to BREMCO and send it to the attention of Susan Jones, BREMCO, 2491 U.S. Highway 421 S. Boone, NC, 28607. Just include a note that you would like to help pay the bill of someone in danger of losing their heat.  If you would like to talk with Susan for more information, her number is 264-8894.

From my fortunate heart I thank you for considering this situation.

My very best to you and yours,

Susan King

Close Encounter with an Ice Storm Limb

This happened on Christmas morning at 9:30am...our power and water had already gone out...I was sitting in the recliner when the 20ft limb came through the roof and nearly impaled me. Four inches to the left and I wouldn't be here.
