High Country voters mirrored state trends, voting for Elaine Marshall as the Democratic candidate for US Senate to face Richard Burr in November. Watauga County totals showed Marshall getting 586 votes to 212 for cal Cunningham. In Ashe, Marshall took 210 to Cunningham's 122; in Avery, only 107 votes were cast with Marshall winning 65-42. Marshall's victory was a blow to Democratic Party leaders in Washington who recruited Cunningham to the race and spent more than $100,000 to boost his campaign. The tab for the election? Around $4 million.
