Blackhawks fall in game one PDF Print

The West Wilkes Blackhawks, led by former Pioneer Ben Wellborn, lost in bizarre fashion on Friday night.

Winning pitcher Rookie Davis of Dixon (24-4) threw a no-hitter, but walked 13 men as Dixon defeated West Wilkes 8-3 in the opening round of the Class 1A state championship series in Zebulon, NC. Davis also struck out 10 men.
"Davis basically shut us down," Blackhawks coach Ben Wellborn said. "He kept us off-balance with his fastball being right around 88, and then he mixed it up well with his curveball. Anytime you can throw your deuce (curveball) at 3-2, then you're pretty effective."
The Blackhawks (21-12) are in the state finals for the first time since 1987, and for only the second time in school history. Wellburn played for Watauga High coach Pete Hardee from 1996-98; he played his college baseball at Appalachian State University from 1998-2002.
Game two was scheduled to be played this morning.
