Charges have been filed in Friday’s fatal accident in Wilkesboro.   82-year old James Helvey Jr. has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and exceeding a safe speed in the Friday crash that killed Donna Smith Johnson of Wilkesboro.  The Winston-Salem man was travelling an estimated 56 miles per hour, according to the Wilkesboro Police reconstruction of the fatal scene.  Speed limit in the stretch in front of Wal-Mart is 45 miler per hour.  Helvey told police he took his eyes off the road for a moment and slammed into the car Ms. Smith and her husband were in, stopped at a turn lane.
