|Warm, Wet May at Grandfather Mountain|

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, NC – The weather data from the month of May recorded at the official US Weather Service reporting station located next to Grandfather Mountain’s Mile High Swinging Bridge shows above-average temperatures and less precipitation than normal.
The average high temperature of 64.94 degrees was 4.27 degrees warmer than normal for May, and the average low temperature of 48.81 degrees was 3.17 degrees above normal for this time of year. The temperature reached 76 degrees on May 28 breaking the daily high record. The previous record for the day was 72 degrees set in 1962.
The rainfall total of 4.47 inches for the past month was 1.08 inches, or 19 percent, below the 54-year average rainfall total for May of 5.55 inches. Rain for the year-to-date totals 33.2 inches, which is 7.53 inches (or 29 percent) above normal for this time of year. Wind gusts over 60 mph were recorded twice in May. The highest three-second wind gust measured by the anemometer on the Mile High Swinging Bridge was 77 mph May 9.
