Normal 0 Former Watauga High baseball player and assistant coach Ben Wellborn has the West Wilkes Blackhawks in the state finals. Normal 0 It’s the first time since 1987, and only the second time in school history. The Blackhawks (21-11) got there after they defeated Bishop McGuinness two-games to one in the Class 1A Western Finals on Saturday in Millers Creek. The Blackhawks nailed down their trip to the state finals by defeating the Vandals 9-6 in game three. Wellborn played for WHS coach Pete Hardee from 1996-1998, and he played his college baseball at Appalachian State University (1998-2002). The Blackhawks will play Dixon (23-4) from the Coastal Plains Conference Friday and Saturday, June 4-5 at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. The Blackhawks lost in a three-game series to Greene Central in their only appearance back in 1987.
