Make that two in a row for former Watauga High soccer coach Doug Kidd.
Kidd, the winningest coach in WHS soccer history, won his second consecutive state championship Saturday morning as Swansboro defeated Forbush 2-1 in the Class 2A title game. It was rematch of last year's final won by the Pirates 1-0. "We went up by two early in the second half," Kidd said. "But Forbush scored 12 minutes into the second half and they kept coming at us. We had to hang on for dear life. "We didn't play our best game of the year. The kids were a little tight throughout the match, but what matters most is that we took the lead, maintained it and won the game." Alana Soetaert scored 96 seconds into the match giving the Pirates (22-4-1) and early 1-0 advantage. Crystan Weaver scored the eventual game winner 1:36 into the second half. Forbush (26-1), which suffered first loss of the season, is a state runner-up for the second year in a row.
