ASU moves a game closer to SoCon Finals PDF Print

The Appalachian State University baseball team continued its miracle run Saturday morning.

The Mountaineers (38-17-1) won their third consecutive game in the Southern Conference tournament by knocking off Western Carolina 3-2 on pinch-hitter Chris Trappy's run-scoring double in the bottom of the ninth.
Jack Myers reached on a bunt single to lead off the ninth; he advanced to second base on Chris Alessandria's sacrifice bunt setting the stage for Trappy.
The win moves ASU into an elimination game with WCU this afternoon at 5 pm. The winner moves into the SoCon championship game Sunday at 2 pm. ASU hasn't won the SoCon tournament since 1984---the only title in school history.
It's quite a turnaround for an ASU team left for dead heading into the final weekend of the regular season. ASU had lost eight of nine and four in a row before it closed the regular season with a three-game sweep of Wofford.
Since that time, the Mountaineers have won six of their last seven games and they find themselves on the brink of reaching the conference championship game Sunday afternoon.
Hector Crespo turned in another solid game with a base hit and two runs scored. Wes Hobson had two hits; Myers also had a pair of hits in four at bats.
Chris Patterson picked up his fourth win with an inning of scoreless relief.
Our coverage of Saturday's second game begins at 4:40 pm on WATA 1450. If ASU advances to the finals, our coverage begins at 1:40 pm on Sunday.
