Appalachian State junior Malcom Styers and sophomore Darius Purcell both came up a little short on Friday at the NCAA East Regional in Greensboro.
Styers, the Southern Conference champion in the shot put, the discus and the hammer throw, finished 39th in the shot put on Friday with an effort of 54-feet, four-inches. He fouled on his last two attempts. Styers did not place in the hammer throw on Thursday as he fouled on all three of his attempts. Purcell, competing in the men's high jump, finished in a two-way tie for 24th with an effort of six-feet, nine-inches. Matt Evans, a senior at Western Carolina and who graduated from McDowell High School, finished in a three-way tie for 18th with an effort of six-feet, 11-inches. Senior Danielle Thorpe, seeking her third consecutive trip to nationals, competes in the women's triple jump on Saturday at 4 pm. She is seeded ninth with a season-best jump of 43-feet, 2.25-inches.
