Normal 0 Former Watauga High soccer coach Doug Kidd is aiming his sights on another state championship.
Kidd, Watauga High’s all-time leader in wins with 495 (men’s and women’s programs combined from 1992-2008), has led the Swansboro women back to the state championship game. The Pirates (21-4-1) reached the title game by knocking off Carrboro 4-1 in the Class 2A Eastern Finals Wednesday night.
And Swansboro will be facing a familiar foe in the state finals on Saturday as the Pirates take on Forbush (26-0), the team they beat 1-0 to win the state championship last spring.
In only his second season at Swansboro, Kidd has won a state title with the women’s program, and he has led the men’s team to the Eastern Finals two consecutive times.
The state finals will be played at the Curtis and Jacqueline Dial Soccer Stadium at the Paul Derr facility at North Carolina State University. The Class 2A championship game begins at 10 am; the Class 1A championship game, which features Avery (20-1-2) taking on Southwest Onslow, begins at 1 pm.
