| WHS tennis takes on Providence in second round |

The Watauga High men’s tennis team will play Providence at home in the second round of the Class 4A State Dual Team Playoffs next Tuesday, May 11.
The Pioneers (15-2), the No.1 seed from the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, defeated T.C. Roberson 5-1 in the opening round Tuesday night in Skyview, NC. Steve Lake, Michael Smith, Brian Geldmeier, Nathan Geldmeier and Davis Roberts posted singles victories against the Rams (8-6), who were the No.1 seed from the Mountain Athletic 3A/4A Conference. Providence (9-2), the No.2 seed from the Southwestern 4A Conference, advanced by knocking off Hopewell (15-3), the top seed from the I-Meck Conference, 6-3 in the first round Tuesday night. The Pioneers will be in Charlotte this weekend for the Class 4A Western Regional at Ardrey Kell High School. Lake and Smith will both play singles; Brian Geldmeier and Nathan Geldmeier, Harrison Battle and Ryan Schweitzer will play doubles. The top four finishers in singles and doubles play will advanced to the state finals May 14-15 in Burlington Parks and Recreation Tennis Center in Burlington, NC.
