10:39 a.m. - The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office began moving into their new facility in downtown Jefferson a few weeks ago, but now they are working on bringing the inmates over to the new jail.

Sheriff James Williams said the facility passed a state inspection yesterday with flying colors, so they are moving inmates into the new facility today.

He said there are around 40 inmates that must me moved, some of which are currently being held in Alleghany County, so the sheriff’s office will likely be moving inmates through this evening.

The new jail is built to hold up to 167 prisoners, while the old the facility could only house 16.
