11:11 a.m. - The high school basketball season is rapidly winding down. And our region of the state still has some teams competing for a state championship.

Well, two of the four teams that remained in the hunt advanced on Friday night. West Caldwell (25-2) marched its way into the men's West Regional Class 2A finals by knocking off Carver 41-40 in overtime Friday night in Greensboro. Kendall Jones led the way with 17 points, including five three pointers. The 81 points scored between the two teams set a regional record for futility. It broke the old record of 82 points scored set on Thursday night between Bishop McGuinness and Monroe. The Warriors take on Smokey Mountain in the Class 2A finals tonight at 8 pm in Greensboro.
On the women's side, Lakin Norris hits a follow shot at the horn as Mitchell defeated Mount Airy 60-58 Friday night in the women's Class 1A West Regional semi-finals. Norris led the Mountaineers with 24 points. The Mountaineers (24-4) take on Bishop McGuinness in the finals today at 4 pm. Bishop McGuinness, which has won the last four Class 1A titles, defeated Avery 57-42 Friday night. The Vikings only shot 28% from the floor. Lauren Avery led the Vikings (24-4) with 14 points.
Hibriten (20-9), which advanced Thursday night by beating Hunter Huss, takes on Concord this afternoon at 2 pm in the men's Class 3A West Regional finals.

The state finals will be played in Raleigh at the Reynolds Coliseum, and in Chapel Hill at the Smith Center next weekend, March 12-13.
