Firefighters fought a blaze along a road construction site on Highway 321 yesterday between Waterfall and Blackberry Roads south of Blowing Rock. The fire caused Highway 321 to be shut down through rush hour. It started around 2pm and covered 5 to 7 acres according to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s office. No word yet on what caused the fire, but light rains through the afternoon helped the firefighters from Caldwell and Patterson Counties and the US Forest Service get it under control. The Forestry Service continues to urge citizens to take particular caution with any outdoor fires. Rain yesterday and today has helped with the dry ground cover, but the next few weeks promise to bring continued warm temperatures and low humidity maing this a particularly vulnerable time for wildfire.
