2:13 p.m. - The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office met with area doctors, pharmacists, and DEA representatives to try and remedy the growing prescription drug abuse problem in the region.

Sheriff Len Hagaman said in 2009, nearly 24,000 tablets of prescription medication were confiscated by the sheriff’s office.  Hagaman said he believes prescription drug abuse is one of the biggest issues facing the narcotics division.

Sheriff Hagaman said the meeting covered several items involving prescription drugs abuse.  He explained, “It included the commonly abused drugs, we included forgery trends, and the DEA actually had two folks here that actually went into the regulations.”

Hagaman said many times abusers will go from doctor to doctor to try and be prescribed certain medications.  He said last week’s meeting really helped everyone involved with rectifying the prescription drug abuse situation to get on the same page.

Hagaman said, “There was a lot of good information that went back and forth and a lot of good dialogue.”

Sheriff Hagaman said another prescription drug drop-off initiative similar to Operation Medicine Cabinet would be held this spring.
