nova.jpgThe Villanova Wildcats took home their first NCAA National Championship when they downed the Montana Grizzlies 23-21 last night at Finley Stadium.

The Wildcats’ speed seemed to be the difference in the game as Montana appeared to have trouble catching up to Villanova on the edges.  Villanova wideout, Matt Szczur was named the game’s most outstanding player as he finished with 227 all-purpose yards.  Szczur racked up 68 receiving yards, 43 return yards, and 159 rushing yards.  The junior receiver lined up as quarterback in the Wildcat formation several times on the evening.

For Montana, this is the second year in the row the Griz have advanced to the championship game and fallen short of a national title.  Overall, the Grizzlies are 2-5 in championship games.

Despite the outcome, Montana brought about twice as many fans as Villanova.  A handful of Appalachian State, Delaware, and UT Chattanooga fans were also scattered throughout the stands.  The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports an estimated 12,500 to 13,000 were in attendance at last night’s game.
