With snow all over the forecast for the weekend, local North Carolina Department of Transportation officials are preparing to keep the roads as safe as possible.

Michael Poe, the district engineer for Avery, Caldwell, and Watauga counties said, “We’ve undertaken the usual pre-season precautions, including stocking our salt supplies, checking and calibrating snow removal equipment and performing dry runs over plow routes.”

The DOT prioritizes which roads are cleared first by focusing on strategic corridors like interstates and multi-lane primary routes that are essential to the movement of traffic.  After those roads are clear, crews work to clear secondary and lower-volume primary roads.
