Kellen Brand reached the 1,000 point barrier in his career Saturday, but the Appalachian State men's basketball team came up short against East Tennessee State.
His three-pointer in the second half wiped out a six-point deficit, but the Buccaneers came charging back to beat ASU 62-58 in their season opener. Brand, a senior who now has 1,007 points in his career, finished with eight points. Donald Sims led ASU (1-1) with 14 points in the loss.
Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, the Mountaineers shot 41 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 25 times. Isaac Butts had 12 rebounds in the loss. He now has 19 in two games; and Nathan Healy, playing in only his second collegiate game, finished with ten points.
It was a tightly-contested game with neither team leading by more than six points. Following a conventional three-point play by Ryann Abraham that brought ASU within one at 57-56, Butts was whistled for an intentional foul with 59 seconds to go that eventually put the contest out of reach.
The Apps return home to play Lees McRae Tuesday night. Our coverage begins at 6:15 pm on WATA 1450 AM.
