It was a tough night for most of the area teams in the opening round of the state playoffs.
In Class 1AA, Bessemer City defeated Avery, 33-9. The Vikings end their season at 5-7. In Class 2AA, East Lincoln defeated Ashe County, 30-16. The Huskies, who began the year at 1-5, finish the year at 6-6. In Class 3A, Hibriten blasted Harding University High, 42-9. The Panthers (12-0), the No.1 seed in the Class 3A West Division, are now 12-0. They will play Concord at home next Friday night in a second-round game. Tuscola defeated Hickory, 17-10. In Class 4A, Alexander Central defeated Porter Ridge, 38-21. The Cougars (11-1) travel to A.C. Reynolds next Friday night in a second-round game. The Rockets easily advanced as they clobbered East Gaston 42-9 in Asheville Friday night. Watauga High and Ragsdale were postponed Friday night. They will hook up in Jamestown this evening.
