Elk River Falls Basin is one step closer to being off-limits
to swimmers, Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye hopes.
Frye has been in touch with U.S. Forest Service
Officials- and protocol is being followed to investigate the situation.
Frye hopes to know more in the next twenty to thirty days.
The action was inspired by the drowning of a
16-year-old boy last week. While investigators are still not clear on why the
boy did not resurface, Frye does not want to chance another drowning. With
unpredictable temperatures and hazardous swells from the falls, it’s a
dangerous situation, according to Frye. He encourages citizens who share his
opinion to contact the U.S. Forest Service with their concerns.
