Interstate 40 near the Tennessee state line is closed because of a rockslide and officials say it may take several months to clean up the entire slide and restore traffic.

The slide occurred around 2:00 Sunday morning.

North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said because of the nature of the rockslide, a top-down method may be used to remove the debris and stabilize the slide area.

DOT officials said a detour has been set up until traffic can flow normally.
