A park off Hunting Hills Lane near the National Guard Armory in Boone was officially opened this week with the installation of the park’s sign.
The park was named after Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson and former Mayor Velma Burnley for their combined 30 years of service to the Town of Boone as elected officials and their work in making the park a reality.
According to Frieda VanAllan of the Town of Boone, the creation of the Clawson-Burnley Park began in the mid 1990’s when the Boone Town Council began acquiring flood-prone properties near the creek that flows under Hunting Hills Lane.
Town staff began construction of the park last spring with the expansion of walking trails, picnic shelters, and many plantings of shrubbery and trees. Town officials said construction of the park will continue through the spring so that a dedication can be held on July 4 of 2010.
