police_grant_photo.jpgThe U.S. Department of Justice awarded the Town of Boone over $12,500 to improve police communication by increasing radio coverage throughout the town.

According to town officials, the grant was called the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant.

In a released statement, Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson said, “The Town of Boone is dedicated to providing a safe environment for our citizens, and we look forward to the implementation of this project to expand their ability to respond to the safety of our citizens.  I would like to thank former Police Chief Bill Post, [interim] Police Chief Curtis Main, and Communications and Records Supervisor Wanda Smith for their excellent work securing this grant for the Town of Boone.”

Officials hope to have the project completed by the spring.

As a side note, town officials said they hope to be able to name a new Boone Chief of Police in the very near future.
