Basketball has brought a group of girls in Watauga County together, according to Watauga Storm parent and coach Bobby Dunnigan.

The girls have worked hard- so hard in fact, that they have qualified for the Youth Basketball of America National Tournament in Orlando. The only thing that stands between them and Florida is money- $8,000 to be specific.

The girls need the cash for accomodations and travel expenses.

Youth basketball isn’t just about the play, he said.

It helps build relationships between kids from different schools. In a way, he said, it prepares kids for high school.

Tonight, area residents have a chance to help the eleven and under girls meet their goal.

A benefit concert and dance, featuring The Buck Haggard Band, is begin held in the Old Cove Creek Gym in Sugar Grove from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Donations are tax deductible.
