The Appalachian State football season is right around the corner with the season opener set for Saturday, September 5 at East Carolina (air time, 10 am on WATA Radio).

But some former Mountaineers have been in the news the past several days. Let's begin with offensive lineman Storm Moore. The incoming freshman, according to the Asheville Citizen Times, who collapsed during voluntary workouts in early July suffered a complications concerning his kidneys. Moore, who stands in at 6-foot-3 and weighs in at 275 pounds and played at Timberland High School in St. Stephens, SC, is undergoing dialysis once or twice a week at a Charlotte hospital. Moore, who will be out for the rest of the season, is expected to make a full recovery.

Also, former Mountaineer Hans Batichon has been named a wide receivers coach at Savannah State University, an independent Division I school in Savannah, Ga. Batichon led ASU in receiving his senior year. He caught 58 passes for 819 yards and seven touchdowns. Batichon was a wide receivers coach with Watauga High last fall.

And in basketball news, former Mountaineer Donte Minter has signed a professional contract to play with Consmetal Navarra in Spain. Minter played professionally in Portugal last season. During his senior year at ASU, Minter averaged 14 points and six rebounds a game. In his career, Minter, who transferred to ASU after he spent his freshman and sophomore years at the University of Virginia, averaged 12.8 points and 5.5 rebounds a game in 55 games with the Mountaineers.
