The Watauga National 13-14-year-old Junior League team defeated Wilkes Natonal 11-7 to win the District 7 title Wednesday night at the Optimist Park in Boone.
It was quite a comeback for Watauga National, which lost the first game 5-2. Watauga built an early 3-0 lead and staved off Wilkes Natonal to win the championship. Jake Cody had three hits in the win, Taylor Shufford had two hits, including a two-run homer, Ethan Greene and Chris Winkler each had two hits apeice. Winkles, who got the starting nod on the mound, ironically came on in relief and nailed it down in the seventh. In other words, Winkler picked up the win and the save. Watauga National now travels to Lewisville, NC for the state tournament. Watauga National will play the District 2 champion, King, at 2:30 pm Saturday afternoon. If they win, Watauga National will then play Mount Airy on Saturday night at 7:30 pm. If they lose, they would play Sunday at 3:30 pm.
