Residents in Amantha have won their fight to preserve the character of their community. Earlier this year the Dept. of Transportation proposed four options to replace two aging bridges in the community just west of Valle Crucis. Three of those options would include extensively changing the traffic pattern through the community and the loss of some historic properties. Citizen outcry commenced when the four plans were made public. It did not fall on deaf ears. The DOT announced this month that they will pursue Alternative Four, the plan favored by the community. Alternative four includes simply replacing the two bridges and leaving the road configuration alone. This plan will require closing the road while construction occurs…an inconvenience neighbors say they will be happy to put up with. On a separate note – the DOT is holding a public meeting and hearing tonight on the widening of Highway 421 from Newmarket Center to the Daniel Boone Inn. The meeting takes place at the Broyhill Inn. An information session begins at 4pm with a formal presentation at 7pm.
